Lately I've been thinking about why I prefer honest music over entertaining music, and I've realized its the outgrowth of my hatred for liars, lying, misleading phrases and statements, and bullshit. These are some of the epicenters of our problems in the world, I feel. ANd for a musician or any person to just say how they feel, to acknowledge some pain or some growth as a human being they've experienced means a lot more than hearing about how beautiful the sun looks or whatever the fuck optimists love to converse about.
I mean, people love to quote dead intellectuals and writers, but they don't take it upon themselves to focus on who is speaking the truth now. I think this is partially becasue as of right now, what is current that we in america feel we should adhere to is all the distracting, happy, clever but vapid nonsense that is spat our way via rappers, party rockers, pop punkers, tv show hosts, and other popular personnel who we are likely to not relate to at all.
What makes Bob Dylan's and 2pac's music special after their most famous and revered work was made no less than 10 years ago? Its the honesty, the relativity their words have to each of our individual hearts.
So when I see someone like jay-z or lil wayne or souljah boy or any other fuckhead of a rapper talking about how fun their life is, the jealousy takes a trunk seat to my abhorrence for the message their giving these kids and the popuilace in general, which is continue amusing yourself to death because there's few things more important than yourself.
Which leads me to another point, some people say my expectations for the world are too utopic, yet they believe in politics and being complacent enough to enjoy their lives. And I end up being crucified for hating humanity at large for what we've done. There's an obvious hypocrisy here, and that is that if you should love humanity so much, why wouldn't you believe that we should work towards attaining a utopic society or at least one where the majority of people are cared for and given what they need?
Fucking bullshit.
Here's some folk I've been loving lately: Horse Feathers.
Music like this helps ease the loneliness. Beautiful voice and perfect songwriting.
