Sole = the man.

Never want to open my eyes, the world only furthers my argument.

is it weird that I've

never seen suffering as usual?

One of the least mentioned albums...ever... but surely a classic. Its So-Called Artists (Sole, Alias, and DJ Mayonnaise) dropping some motherfucking satirical awesomeness. Sole and Alias are the MC's and Mayo is the, uh, yea, he's the DJ. Great album from start to finish, I was really happy to have stumbled upon this a while back but could barely find it. I know Sole doesn't want his new material posted for bootlegging, but this is old and way to hard to find.

Deep Puddle Dynamics

Not a whole lot that needs to be said about his album either. Its truly a landmark in my progression as a fan of music. I got it after I got Why?'s Alopecia, which was also my first anticon record. Prior to that, I wasn't even listening to rap much. I had gotten my firstAtmosphere album which was When Life Gives YOu Lemons. I actually found Why? on myspace's home page, being promoted for the release of Alopecia.

After being blown the fuck away by the honesty of Yoni of Why? I searched last.fm for a similar artist to Why? and ended up hearing Sole's first single "Bottle of Humans". After being once more blown the fuck away, I researched Tim Holland himself on wikipedia and found out he was in a group with Slug. So some time passed, and I was skeptical to get The Taste of Rain, but once I did, I couldn't stop being impressed, not even if I wanted to find their lyrics and concepts dull. One song that stood out most to me first was THe Scarecrow Speaks. I'm not one for encouraging and inspiring songs, but every verse in this song made me begin to question my inactivity at times.

Sole saying "Be what ya speak, never speak on what ya be." and "It ain't that hard but stand if ya ready to be a man" really impressed itself upon my lethargy and insecurity.

Doseone saying "I come to you with one heart, broken in two, gnashed hands, and many flaws, A MAN" and "Make you yours" and "I implore you....just think" still gives me chills to this day because so many rappers aren't willing to say they're a man, even with a flawed demeanor and being. Also "simplistically, topsoil is no sea shell full of bitter ocean body, but it can be," encapsulates the sheer ambiguity of life itself in a mere sentence.

Alias saying "I consider myself blessed when I think" really personifies the maturity of his style and the truth he effortlessly encompasses in his raps.

Slug saying "God got drunk, drove heaven into a tree, now there's no reason left for you to breathe." makes me laugh even now. Him ending his verse with "trying to speak to the class and justify the act of pointing my finger at your head and asking you what the fuck is that?" also reiterated the importance of consideration and conscious thought for me.

This all got the ball rolling for who I am now and feel I'm still growing as. This album also has its fair share of more traditional, braggadocios raps and even some well placed humor. Check this shit out.

I've also thrown in some freestyles I've gotten this past year. Two are about 5 minutes and one is.....wait for it.....30 fucking minutes. I highly suggest signing up for Sole's forum HERE for more potential exclusives like this.

Sole - My President

CHORUS:
X2
My president is black,
an I know that it's historic.
Can't help but feel I been sold a bad product,
an I want my money back,
or the change that we demand.
I want a new deal - not a black republican.

This year was a bad year,
I knew it would be that,
they gave us some nice speeches,
but I cant eat that.
We voted for change,
but homie I don't see that.
Has a momententum at the start
Didn't know how to seize that.

Mr post racial - don't you understand?
There ain't no middle ground when you dealin' with the clan
we got drones up in Pakistan,
forget that - Afghanistan.
Just be a grown man, quit playing up in the sand.

We got some real problems,
they fuckin' with Glenn Beck.
What up wit da Amy Goodman
And some Juan Gonzales

An to my name I got three hundred dollas',
and to my credit I got ten or so albums
My Corolla's bullet grey,
and my wife owns that.
The car is in her name,
but the bank owns the debt

We just moved to Colorado, ain't no jobs here but dumb shit.
this ain't a recession; its a readjustment.
the late great USA owners of the world days are gone.
better learn to grow some food on your own.
Only thing about me that's rich
is the spices I use, the beats that I rock, the path that I chose.

CHORUS:
X2
My president is black,
an I know that it's historic.
Can't help but feel I been sold a bad product,
an I want my money back,
or the change that we demand.
I want a new deal - not a black republican.

We talking Hoover verse Roosevelt,
Fox news verse Rosa Parks,
Osama verse Fifty Cent.
a Phoenix can't swim with sharks.

So wake up them blue dogs,
kick dirt on them' red states.
And give us a single payer, fuck all the red tape.
And fuck having empire
we outta aspire; to more than pursuit of cash
relentlessly chasin' power

In high school they taught Latin
shoulda' taught Mandarin,
shoulda' taught Marxism,
shoulda' taught Blacksmithin'.

My money isn't green cause I'm livin' on credit,
only time i see green is when they say "cash back or debit."

I ain't mad at wall street, cause we all wanna ball
the planet's overpopulated and cant feed em' all
problem is a missile costs a couple of mils'
wanna' swim up in the beach but i'm swimming in bills
an there ain't no reprieve till Obama grow a spine
Its the death of a nation and don't need no common ground

CHORUS:
X2
My president is black,
an I know that it's historic.
Can't help but feel I been sold a bad product,
an I want my money back,
or the change that we demand.
I want a new deal - not a black republican.

"It was November 08,
my home state was Blue, no New England was Red
so I threw my weight up in, a swing state instead
8 years of this damn war, couldn't face it to lose
so i drove to New Hampshire, walked'em straight to the booth
trooped the whole district holdin' signs and workin' phones
6am Election Day until the polls closed
then got back on the damn line, callin' Alaska
up to Wascilla, still gunnin' for Sarah
I ain't no Democrat, but this was fate by the throat
I believed in your promise, now where did it go?
Guantanamo's still open, Single Payer got dropped
this Bail Out was murder, tent cities popped up in the park!
Rendition's still on the table with no investigation
of war crimes or blatant Israeli invasion
man, what's the matter with you? Audacity's Hope
but you ain't done what you said or what we sent you to do...

BRIDGE:
X2
My president is black,
we still cant relax.
The war will stop itself
single payer ain't passed.
My money's on the movement
we're not gonna stop.
Gotta keep on working,
black president or not.

(yea, ask not what your president can do fr you
but what you can do to keep your presiient honest.
And i'm saying right now, get outta wall street homie.
Run the country, It ain't too late.)

The kind of concert I wanna be caught alive at

Bet if me and you had to breathe the same oxygen you'd choke
And foam comes out your headphones
And little men in black would scurry around and jump on dicks
Saying "Yo champ, keep the heads noddin'", I keep heads still

If I ever perform, I hope to god I attract an audience like that, people who would rather listen to the art than let it make them loose control of their body as if it were a drug. Or rather, I'd hope my music would be this rational and intellectual that it would be like a drug that allows the audience to explore their own consciousness and mind.

On the mediocrity of music

To the man making all the new shadow puppets,
i like your style more worthwhile then rubbish.
a big break for bad taste acting like faith is a face,
a dumpster man singing a dumpster song of redemption,
share the broken note, it's the only note.
people here got thick skin to hold the nothing in.

Three things:

"Its hard to remember that our lives are such a short time.
Its hard to remember when it lasts such a long time."- Isaac Brock

And

"I don't think that life is short. So I think you should stop saying that. 'Life is short, man.' No it's not! Life is excrusiatingly long. Let me rephrase that. The life you got left is excrusiatingly long. The life behind you, it's done. So yeah, life is short, but only when you turn around and look at it. But if you keep looking forward, you got a lot of years to think about. If you don't think life is long, if you live every day like life is short, you know what you become? A fuckin' asshole. You gotta live your life like someday soon you're gonna hit some miserable Tuesday night that's just gonna seem to go on for days and days and days. Waiting for either some phone call to come that doesn't come or some phone call to stop that won't stop. Because as it's laid out in front of you seems to go on forever. But look back to when you were 4 and it seems like last Sunday. So just keep looking forward and keep your good heart on you and keep doing the best you can do and love who you love the best you can love." -John Mayer

"After all is said and done, we barely have memories. So I write what I feel, sue me if its empty." - Sole

The overarching concept here is just that your life is short, but it can feel long as hell. So do what you want to do with it, but don't feel rushed. You'll live regardless and if you die, you're dead. At least die moving in a direction you want to. And by direction, I simply mean do what you feel you need to as a person, but isn't asking too much of yourself. Its often easy to judge yourself and feel as if you owe something in you or someone else the perfection we think is so possible because its parading across our television screen, but...well...I'll just close with one more quote from Isaack Brock.

"Do you need a lot of what you got to survive?"

Note:

When Everything is helpless, be realistic.
-Sole

To go further than merely quoting this lyric, I'll say that people really need help. We're all defenseless parts of a mechanism much larger than ourselves that we've created. And even the machine we've made is defenseless to nature, therefore we're all fucking helpless. I'm not trying to give anyone a panic attack or advising people to go out and party like its 2099 because anything can happen to you without your influence, I am only saying that you and I and we all should prize our life and our time. It needs to be spent in effort of helping each other on some small or large scale, or a varying and growing scale. Collective effort is all I'm asking for.

Each song on this cd is so filled with truth and blatancy that its hard for me to even post it. I'm not posting Selling Live Water or Bottle of Humans or Sole & the Skyrider band for that very same reason, which isn't to say that nothing else he's made isn't honest, but this is a sincere act of promotion on my behalf, and I would feel less...right...if I posted the aforementioned songs.

So here's at least a quote per song:

The American Standard
"sit, citizen. Stand. Run, lie down."

"we were good sports, but we made much better game."

Terror In The Water

"What came first the bullet or the factory?
What came last the ad or the article?"

"Find new shadows to taste but never
even wonder where the light comes from"

"Don't wanna be every man because every man ain't me"

Self Fulfilling Prophets

"after a pat on the back comes a kick in the ass"

I Can't Stand (Pt. 1)

"who's misanthropic? must be the broken philanthropist
with no pot to piss...but a hand...to scratch thy empty hand
and ask thy self to break more bread from thy daily bread"

"in my dreams we're all jesus already,
seems we've been on autopilot"

"recognize love, hold it like a gun to your head
maintain a healthy distance from that which you know
has become tainted. give til your blue in the face
but all your work was indeed in vain...carry on
like it ain't so, because it aint so"

"life was so bittersweet, killed me off minute by minute
somehow I wasn't dead."

"i've seen worse but never been so happy since
when I realized we were all doomed from the start"

"i've only made two compromises
first was being born
second will be dying."

"I can't stand to watch my fellow man living a lie
'cuz theirs must be so much better than mine."

The Binger Is Over

"american's don't die, we're cloned
WE settled the west WE built the schools
kicked out the prince. They stole our tools
Now we look like an "O Well" nightmare."

Allieverwanted (Original)

"state of mind in a state of boredom."

"know thyself cuz once you fail to you're easily forgotten."

Nothing Wrong (Pt. 2)

"if this is as good as it gets, give me a gun
let me finish the job"

Middle Aged Rapper Blues

"30 years later, your father's still a drug addict and alcoholic
He ain't learned a damn thing
And you don't wanna be like that
And the FBI don't even know ya name
Sick of the sound of my own voice
And the dogs piss everywhere they can
And everything smells like garlic
And its too late to go back to college
or try to get a job and tredge on"

" You're too young to sing like tom waits and don't wanna make music for 18 year olds who think they know everything."

Music's gotten impersonal

"Music's gotten impersonal, hip hop persona's gotten vain,
so mcs i ain't feeling you if i don't know your real name.
hip hop ain't dead, the industry isn't wack, indy hip hop is a demo fair.
keep your sights set, what you wanna move rats, minds, or posteriors"
-
Sole

I couldn't have said it better myself. Music isn't just about entertainment or satiating one's urge to have a fucking hobby. Unfortunately, its became nothing else but that in the state of what is now mainstream hip hop. Some rappers attempt to make fans think introspectively, but most just try to get their posteriors moving to a beat. Its fucked up to say the least.

"A million bleeding hearts composing prose in blood to live and die a thousand times."

Artists no longer live through their music. They no longer even need to make music if for nothing else than to get a check and get the approval of their peers. Hip hop is hardly even an art anymore. The message is lost in a cesspool of wordplay meant to get heads nodding and compliments thrown into the ego of the speaker.

"Your private parts are being touched. And forcibly at that.
Its ok, feel violated, anything but entertained."- Doseone

I'll now state the obvious: most artists don't give a fuck about their fans. They couldn't care less about the populace of devoted entertainees unless they were supporting them. This is why artists suddenly disappear when their one hit wonder can't carry their weak ass momentum. They no longer believe making music is worth it if a million people won't buy their album weekly. They're just taking advantage of people's desire to have fun. Our innate plight for an ever pleasureful life.

"You're making music to drop a penny into and immediately end the contact" - Alias

Whenever I think of people saying that music is just entertainment, I can only compare music to art as in drawing and so on. The most revered artists were typically crazy and created cathartic efforts expressing their very soul; expressing their being in a tangible form. 2pac did just that. Sole does that. Wu-Tang did that, specifically Ghostface. And countless others that have either dropped out of the raptastic rat race or gone the underground, lesser known, respect driven route.

My biggest problem is that these are the most talented and only truly worthy people who should go platinum and be the ones on MTV and BET and VH1 getting respect. Solely because they wouldn't go spend all their working on a fucking car or chain. They'd actually add something to this intrinsically pessimistic and cruel world we live in. They wouldn't donate to a charity once in a while or when they get bored. And they wouldn't give to releif funds just because its in the news. They'd give just as their art gives. But instead, we have nothing but rappers like Souljah Boy and fucking Young JEezy and Wayne to appraise our rap standards according to. Which leads me to my final point about music in general: if you haven't listened to music thats made you question the way you think about life and/or music, then you taking not utilizing the medium. Its like reading children's books your whole life that reiterate optimism and carelessness in order to maintain a smile and be productive for the sake of being productive instead of growing the fuck up and reading some Nietzche and Freud to extrapolate your ideas about living and what human beings are. A kid will say a human is what they do, an intellectual will say a human is what motives they're composed of.

"Whats content is OURS to define" - Doseone.

I recently went to a Modest Mouse concert and felt like I must have been the only one who truly loved the band for their art. I mean, they perform for a crowd of people who will sing along to misanthropic lyrics like its a pop song. This being my lead in to another point: people hardly feel music itself is something that should help them develop. People will listen to an artist bemoan their life and sing that shit with a smile on their face everytime like its a joyous piece of satiety for them to bite off of. Its bullshit. I think one of musuc's ultimate goals should be to provide new thoughts or at least the representation of potentially beneficial thoughts to people who otherwise may not experience them. I hope this can someday happen, but I know it won't because that would require far too much thought and self-examination for the average person. Fucked up, its far beyond.

Sole is a badass

Sole - I Can't Stand (Pt.1)

"I can't stand to watch my fellow man living a lie"
