Really hate traditionalism. It seems we'd be sensible enough to see that what we've done thus far hasn't exactly helped us, only catapulted us into a pit we now rely on figments and delusions to help us out of.
Not only is it containing the possibilities of music, but its doing the same with tv shows and movies even. I just saw this commercial for this new NBC show the listener....about this guy who can read minds. And the last thing the main character says is "This isnt a gift...its a curse."
Really? Are you fucking kidding me? Is this what we're now supposed to be entertained by seeing on tv? I'd hate to judge a show based on just one line of monologue, but what the fuck. Holy shit. How many times has that been said before? Its like every fucking show that gets on television relies upon our ideals for norms and what we should accept. ANd its bullshit. Conversation is just like real life, but conversation in real life already feels scripted as hell and too reliant upon fucking catch phrases or cliches that have been around longer than anyone who says them shits.
This is why Scrubs was probably the last show to really have a purpose. To actually be a glimpse of real life as portrayed by actors. There wasn't just a story or a plot or a progressive climax and a falling action in every episode, but a realization that may have been expressed in another work, but was also entirely relevant and never forced. JD would be the main person to idealize something, but the show exhibited that everyone goes through these things.
In music, everyone's gotta have a fucking chorus and a bridge and rhyme. And if not, you've gotta sound like you're humming your words to the beat. I'm not saying this is wack or shouldn't be done, but as someone who writes, it hinders the message. There lies far more potential in genuinely saying what one has to say rather than saying what can rhyme. And not only are the rhyme schemes in rap boring as fuck, but everyone can't help but rely upon the same boring imagery and wack ass metaphors or similies. Always has to be a 'like' in there or a simple one line equation of two inanimate objects or people. Its fucking retarded.
Not to mention the perpetuating of gender roles that this does. All this bullshit about which sex should do what. How to fucking look sexy or handsome. How to approach someone.
I'm tired of seeing people complain about one facet of their life when they're willing to adopt traditions already held and perpetuate them as if it's better enjoy your life than have it mean something. I remember reading a Kurt Vonnegut essay and he emphasized that young people should focus on enjoying themselves at a young age and then upon getting older, they should do what they can to make a difference. I agree partially, but I don't think we should be waiting on grey hairs to sprout before we decide that we need to dedicate our lives to people who need people. We're all we fucking have. Fuck a government and a god. We're all we have. Do something different.
